Morning in Asahi
The sun is rising slowly over the Pacific Ocean.
Early sunshine begins to warmly illuminate the sea, the port, the station, the school, rice paddies, and eventually my house.
You can hear cheerful morning greetings all over the newly sunlit city. The stage is set for a new day in Asahi.

The afternoon in Asahi
Kujukuri Beach, Hikata Hachimangoku, and the national highway Route 126,
in bright sunshine.
Everything, including buildings, fields, and laundry, is shining brightly.
Warmth in sunny places, a gentle breeze swaying the ears of rice,
and the lively voices of children.
Everyday life in all its fun, painful, sad, and happy details
plays out on Asahi’s brightly-lit stage.

The evening in Asahi
The sun sets over the western hills in a burst of glorious light
just before the sky darkens.
In sunset light, children leave for home, a train arrives
at the station, and cars return home.
I always return to this place where happiness is waiting for me.
“Welcome home!”
Before long, the lights in the houses go off one by one.
Everyone falls asleep quietly, dreaming of tomorrow’s sunrise.
